Stern Fan Network hates Howard – some “fans” will bitch no matter what
Written by Gerald "Gerry" Pugliese

It’s bizarre. How could Stern Fan Network, a Howard Stern “fan” site, boasting 750,000 unique users each month, be mostly known for hating the show? It’s illogical, but entirely true.

Even Howard—who without him websites like SFN and this blog couldn’t exist—has ranted about the forum. Just last week he said, “Everyone knows I am the most hated man on Stern Fan Network.”

Not exactly a good commercial for SFN, especially since Howard said once before, “I stay away from Stern Fan Network. I can’t read it.” That’s harsh!

Here’s the question. Why would people who dislike the show so intensely, spend hours listening and then even more time complaining about it? If it vexes you so much, why are you spending so much time involved with it!

I think they’re mental. That’s not just a cheap shot. A lot of SFNers must have “love me daddy” issues, a line like this, posted on SFN, reeks of it: “Guests suck, Artie is hackie, and Howard doesn’t seem to give a shit about anything except Beth and throws all of it in our faces.” Give me attention daddy! But what’s really going on here?

John M. Grohol, Psy.D, of PsychCentral and a Howard Stern fan—seriously, the dude knew everything that happened on the show the day we spoke—says forums in general are to blame, discussion boards give people who normally don’t have a public voice a soapbox and many, like most members of Stern Fan Network, use the forum as a bitch-fest.

“The Stern Fan Network has been around for forever, but people would complain no matter what. Its just like the email the Stern show gets everyday,” explains Dr. Grohol, “Its fifty-percent I love this and fifty-percent I hate this, no matter what the topics is, whether its Artie, Robin’s news, Lisa G. or whatever.” Dr. Grohol insists you can’t win with everyone.

Forums draw out the people with the biggest axes to grind, but Dr. Grohol insists there are people like him who dig the show and are just content to listen, saying, “We don’t need to go further and talk about the show everyday. Although I’m sure there is a minority of people who do enjoy doing that.” This could explain why there aren’t many positive threads on SFN.

True fans, such as Dr. Grohol and I, just sit back and enjoy the show. We’re too busy to bitch. Personally, I’m not a big fan of Sal and Richard’s prank calls, but I don’t write countless emails about how much I hate them. I don’t care that much. I have to go pay the rent.
