I have been a fan of Artie Lange from his MadTV days through his days on Howard Stern. I have seen four of his concerts, and I have met him twice and even bought him dinner once. After his latest series of lies, the most recent about his DUI, I am no longer a fan of his. When he was battling heroin, I stuck behind him because many comedians are tortured souls. However, after he plead guilty to DUI on September 30th, Lange has lost me as a fan. Artie could have killed himself with his drug addictions, but riding while under the influence could jeopardize innocent people.
On the Stern show this morning, a policeman called in and Lange remained defiant and unapologetic:
"Howard took a call from a guy who said that Artie is leaving some details of his DUI out of the story. He said that there was a witness who saw him weaving in and out of traffic and stuff. Artie said he didn't hear anything about that. He said that it wasn't from being fucked up if it did happen. The caller said that he also staggered around at the scene and there was a witness saying that he was drunk. Artie didn't remember that either. Howard said he's not sure what went on but it's over now. Artie said he wasn't drunk so it doesn't really matter. The caller said that he knows that he was put through a bunch of tests including an eye test. Artie said he didn't remember doing that either. The caller, who said that he was there, was saying that he saw all of this stuff going on. Artie said he was the cop who was helping out with getting the car back. The cop said that there were other details that he might want to get to. Artie said he didn't want to get into it and he had his radio on so Howard just let the guy go."
Most comedians are dark and sad people, and I can appreciate that. However, prior to the months before his DUI, Artie Lange preached about being clean and healthy. Lange is worse than a drug addict...he is a hypocrite and a liar now. I will no longer support his addictions by buying his DVDs or seeing his concerts. Artie Lange, after all these years, has lost me as a fan.
